PROGRAMS

KidActive believes in a proactive and preventative approach to improving the health and well-being of children and youth. Our intent is to initiate and sustain innovative programs and active networks that engage young people physically and mentally as a means to prevent chronic disease and increase positive life outcomes.

“The first step to assessing a society’s success is its future ‘promise of well-being’…Early Childhood Development and subsequent health throughout the lifecourse  is surely an indicator of future societal success. Children are vulnerable due to many factors, from their stage of biological development to their compromised ability to exercise life choices.” (1)

In other words, knowledge and understanding of early childhood health and well-being is not only a direct measure of a societies immediate welfare but also one of future prospects.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our first  - Physical Activity in the Early Years Workshop.  We will be offering a workshop in Eastern Ontario in September, 2010.  E-mail Shawna Babcock - sbabcock@kidactive if you would like to offer one in your community.

SUMMARY:

“The evidence is clear – experiences in early childhood have a major impact on future learning, work, health, and social and emotional makeup.” Charles E. Pascal ‘With Our Best Future in Mind’, June 13, 2009

Faye Mick-Johnston, infant development expert,  concluded her presentation with one of the the most salient points.  Time that young children spend with family and friends active and engaged while playing, learning and exploring is time that stays with them for a lifetime – etched into every child’s memories.  Increasing the quality and quantity of this active time together is a critical window into effectively addressing longer term health issues that face all children.

PROGRAMS / WORKSHOPS

KidActive School based workshops are currently taking place in schools across the Champlain District of Ontario.

Our programs and workshops identify the outdoors as an ideal learning environment for children, youth and their families to develop a meaningful and active relationship with natural environments. This critical outdoor ‘classroom' and accessible ‘backyard' engages children and youth in positive activities that build self-esteem and develop critical life skills and competencies with a sense of belonging and creativity.

Children and youth need action-backed community strategies to ensure they grow into healthy and active adults. Our inclusive and adaptable programs provide every child and professional with access to positive and fun opportunities to make and influence healthy lifelong choices.

It takes an entire community to contribute to the healthy growth and development of every child.  We recognize that in order to effectively address current health issues facing children and give every child the opportunity to make healthy life choices, society needs to collaborate.  Our workshops provide everyone with the tools to make informed, positive life choices that affect their daily lives. We focus on the spaces where children and youth live, learn and play and the factors that create healthy environments.  Incidental movement is as critical as access to recreation and safe, inspiring places to play.
